How We Began
The school was created in 1973, when a group of forward thinking CCNY professors in collaboration with relevant others proposed the creation of a new type of medical degree combined program that would be mission based and seek to right some of the wrongs regarding healthcare delivery to the underserved and who was giving that care. Shortly after, funding from Sophie & Leonard Davis led to the naming of the school. The Sophie Davis School has recruited underrepresented populations into medicine, increased medical services in underserved areas, and increased the availability of primary care physicians.
